Put recovered funds to economic use, cleric tells Buhari

Looted funds recovered from corrupt political office holders through anti-corruption campaign must be put to productive use in order to move the economy forward, the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Adewale Martins, has said.

The cleric also advised the Federal Government to shun nepotism and put relevant experts in appropriate offices to enhance economic growth.

He spoke while fielding questions from journalists on the state of the economy at the priestly ordination of some clerics in Lagos.

He said, “We hope that some of the recovered funds would be pumped into the economy to ease the recession period. Let us shun nepotism and make use of the right people in order to move forward because of the suffering people are going through.”

Martins also urged state governments to work on a fiscal policy that will shore up their Internally-Generated Revenue to enable them rely less federal allocation.

This, he said, would assist state governments to meet basic needs, particularly in the face of the dwindling economic fortunes of the country.

He said, “Enough of state governments trooping to Abuja for allocation; they also should look for ways to generate funds, they should improve on their IGR by increasing it so that they can pay salaries. When people are not paid for their labour, it could lead the country to another form of insecurity because a hungry man is an angry man.

“Impunity is our major challenge in this country; if the government is able to address this, then it will go a long way to tackle corruption. Otherwise the change we are all clamouring for will not come.”

On security, the Archbishop said there was still a lot of works to be done; adding that if people were not paid their wages as at when due, they could turn to violence.

The Catholic leader recalled that the outcome of a meeting of archbishops in the country held recently in Akure showed that the masses were suffering and it was high time President Muhammadu Buhari overhauled his cabinet and engage experts that could proffer solution to the current economic challenges irrespective of their political affiliation.

The first camera phone

The first cell phone with a built-in camera was manufactured by Samsung and released in South Korea in June, 2000. The SCH-V200 flipped open to reveal a 1.5-inch TFT-LCD, and the built-in digital camera was capable of taking 20 photos at 350,000-pixel resolution, which is 0.35-megapixels, but you had to hook it up to a computer to get your photos. The camera and the phone components were essentially separate devices housed in the same body.

There’s a strong argument that the first real camera phone was produced by Sharp and released in Japan by J-Phone (now SoftBank Mobile) in November, 2000. The J-SH04 could take photos, like the one on the right (from Japanese site Showcase) at 110,000-pixel resolution or 0.11-megapixels. The real difference between it and the Samsung SCH-V200 was the fact that the J-SH04 allowed you to send your photos electronically.

First US camera phone

– Sanyo SCP-5300

It was November 2002 before the United States adopted the crazy Japanese trend with the Sanyo SCP-5300 on Sprint. It cost $400 and it featured a chunky clamshell design. With a 0.3-megapixel capability, it could capture shots at 640 x 480 pixels. The one pictured on the left comes from this IGN review. The Sanyo SCP-5300 also had a basic flash, white balance control, self-timer, digital zoom, and various filter effects like sepia, black and white, and negative colours.

By the end of 2003, camera phones were really taking off in the US and over 80 million had already been sold worldwide. We even covered the trend by reporting that camera phones rival DVD players sales back in November 2003. The good news for consumers was that quality was rising and prices were dropping.

Customs officers shoot four residents while chasing smuggler September 29, 2016

There was confusion at Sycamore Junction, Ajara Topa area of Badagry, Lagos State, after some customs officers allegedly opened fire on some residents.

It was learnt that the officers, who were attached to the Federal Operations Unit, were chasing a smuggler who had fled into the community.

Among the four people hit by stray bullets were a motorcycle rider, Alayoade Arewayo and one John Sonayo.

While Arewayo survived and was rushed to a private hospital in Badagry, Sonayo was said to have died in transit from the Badagry General Hospital to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

The other two, whose names could not be ascertained as of press time, were reportedly taken to a hospital in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

PUNCH Metro gathered that immediately the incident happened, the customs officers fled the scene.

They were said to have got reinforcement from a military barracks in the area to forestall a mob attack.

Arewayo, who sustained a gunshot injury in the leg, said he was returning from a church programme around 7.30pm on Saturday when he was hit by a stray bullet.

He said, “I had a crusade programme at Marina, Ebute area on that day. I had left the place for home when it started raining. I decided to call at a shop to buy noodles that I would take in the night.

“I had hardly dropped off my motorcycle, when I started hearing sporadic gunshots; people were running helter-skelter. I thought it was armed robbery. The people I wanted to buy noodles from had also taken to their heels.

“As I fled for dear life, I was hit by a bullet in the leg. I fell and was assisted to a hospital by my friend that was with me. It was later I was told that four people were shot and one person later died.”

It was learnt that the customs officers neither went to the community in their operational vehicle nor wore their uniforms.

They were reportedly led by one DSC Jude.

A resident of the community, Mr. David Taiwo, said he reported the incident at the Badagry Police Division around 8.30pm, adding that the Divisional Police Officer assigned a policeman to visit the scene of the shooting.

He said, “We discovered that the customs officers were from the Federal Operations Unit in Ikeja; they were posted to Badagry. They were not in their operational vehicle and they didn’t wear their uniform. They came in a private car. They pursued a smuggler, who loaded about eight bags of rice.

“To effect arrest, they started shooting sporadically. Four innocent people were hit by bullets. One of them, John Sonayo, was taken to the Badagry General Hospital, but he was referred to LASUTH. It was on the way that he died. The family members of the other victims took them to Cotonou for treatments. The victims were not smugglers.”

Taiwo said the customs officers ran to Ibereko Baracks to get reinforcement against members of the community that had gathered to attack them.

A community leader said no fewer than 10 residents had been allegedly killed in 2016 by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service, adding that the officers usually harassed residents.

“Sometimes, they move from house to house with the help of soldiers. They ransack houses and shops. People in Badagry now live in fear,” he added.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed that there was a shooting incident in the area, adding that the police had written the customs authorities for details.

She said, “We have written to the customs authorities to furnish us with relevant facts that will aid our investigations into the matter.”

The spokesperson for the NCS, Mr. Jerry Attah, said he had yet to be briefed on the incident, adding that he would get back to our correspondent as soon as he was able to get across to the leader of the team.

“But as a command, we don’t condone indiscipline and we don’t encourage our officers to shoot at harmless civilians. We will investigate the case,” he said.

However, an official told PUNCH Metro that those shot were smugglers, adding that the customs service recovered two cars filled with smuggled rice.

He said, “What happened that day was that some customs officers, attached to Iyafi checkpoint, apprehended two unregistered Passat Station Wagon loaded with smuggled rice along Sycamore Hotel Road. One of the vehicles was attacked by the smugglers en route to the customs office.

“Some of the customs officers fired several shots to secure their safety, thereby injuring two persons, while the two cars were forcefully released by the smugglers.  One of the injured persons was taken to the general hospital where he later died. The other person is responding to treatment in a hospital in Badagry.”

PILLOW TALK, STRICTLY ADULT:HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SEXTUAL RELATIONSHIP (18+)

Pillow Talk, Strictly Adult:how
To Improve YourSexual Relationship .
This is strictly for the ladies, but you can read this and pass
the knowledge to her. I must also warn that this article is for
the good of the married and adult singles who should be
preparing for marriage. Our relationships are suffering and
nobody wants to go into the main problems; we are all
chasing shadows tagging it all, “spiritual”.
Like I always tell people, every man is a fan of the vagina
and every woman is a fan of the penis.
The only thing that determines how strong a fan your
husband will be is your ability to make his time in there a
memorable one.
It has nothing to do with age and class; it has everything to
do with your knowledge of hygiene and body care. How many
women can boast of a clean southern hemisphere that is
free from foul odour and itching? Girl, what does your man
see and perceive when you are alone with him?
A lot of relationships have broken up because of this foul
odour emanating from the vaginal area (guys won’t let their
pastor and priest know that this is the problem). A good
number of men have lost interest in sex with their wives
because of the inability of the woman to take proper care
of this zone.
Before I go on, I want you to stand in front of your mirror
and do a little check-up. What does your vaginal area look
like? Is it a forest with several animals living in it, a tiled
floor, or a well trimmed garden? Okay, let me bring it down to
your level; what is the condition of the hairs down there?
Have you tried to find out how he likes it? If he wants to
have some hairy feel, you must keep it well trimmed; if he
wants it hairless, do it for him, but make sure you go hairless
without bumps as that would be saddening.
In today’s article, I am going to let you know those little
things you do ignorantly thereby destroying your vaginal area.
Lack of Exercise
Are you one of those who believe exercise is just for weight
loss? You are wrong. Exercise goes a long way to affect
your sex life. Your man wants to have his woman fit and
flexible in bed. The more weight you gain, the more difficult it
becomes for your man to enjoy sex with you. Lack of
exercise will make your vaginal muscles weak.
The best exercise to improve sex is the Kegel squeeze,
which basically strengthens your PC muscles which holds up
your vagina, uterus, anus, bladder and urethra. The stronger
the muscles are, the more intense your orgasms will be. Try
to stop urine flow when you pee. Hold the squeeze for five
seconds, then release. You can also squeeze your pelvic area
while cooking in the kitchen or right there in your office.
Doing 50 to 100 Kegel squeezes a day will help keep those
muscles in good shape. Don’t do Kegels constantly because it
can lead to urinary tract and bladder infections.
Wrong Underwear
That particular underwear looks nice doesn’t mean it is good
for you. Always go for cotton under wears. Avoid panties
made from synthetic materials as they inhibit the circulation
of air around the vaginal area, creating the damp, warm
condition ideal for bacterial growth. Cotton is by far the
best fabric to wear and if you enjoy wearing silky under
wear save it for occasional rather than everyday use. In
addition to this, avoid constant wearing of tight-fitting
trousers, panty hose and girdles.
Poor Hygiene
I get goose pimples whenever I hear women talk about going
to bed sometimes without having their bath. Some celebrities
have even said it on national television. Are deodorants and
perfumes supposed to take the place of a good bath in a
woman’s life? How can a normal woman sleep without a
night bath? Some even sleep with their bras and panties.
Girl, it is not healthy. Smelling good outside doesn’t mean you
are clean inside. Always keep your genital area clean and dry.
Douching
Please avoid those douching products in the market. They do
you more harm than good. They are one of the major causes
of vaginal itching. Your vagina doesn’t require cleansing other
than normal bathing. Repetitive douching affects the normal
organisms in the vagina and can actually increase the risk of
vaginal infection. Douching won’t clear up a vaginal infection.
Scented and Harsh Soaps
Don’t use scented or harsh soap such as those with
deodorant and anti-bacterial components. There are
different ranges of feminine wash in the market. These are
soap-free and safer for you. Just get into your local
drugstores and ask for feminine wash like Sebamed,
Femfresh, Summer’s Eve, and Beauty Formula. These are
affordable. I don’t know what you feel about the popular
Lactacid in the market; but I can tell you it is harsh for your
vagina.
Also avoid scented tampons and sanitary pads. Keep that
can of body spray away from your vaginal area. Avoid those
feminine sprays; they will only lead to irritation. Coloured
toilet paper and bubble baths should also be avoided. Wipe
from front to back after using the toilet. This stops the
spreading of faecal bacteria to your vagina.
Use of Public Toilet
I personally don’t use public toilets. I have been able to train
myself not to use them. You can do that too. But if you must
use public toilets, please always have a small bottle of
antiseptic in your bag to wipe the toilet seat before use.
Never use it on your vaginal area as that can lead to itching.
Indecency
Girl, you keep jumping from one man to the other out of
greed. I want to let you know that this freelance nature
could lead to your trouble. The introduction of sperm into the
vagina which has a different PH (acid/alkaline) balance to
that in the vagina can lead to vaginal odour. The earlier you
learnt to be faithful to your partner, the better for you. Why
should you go through your life depending on antibiotics and
clotrimazole cream? They will in no distant time weaken your
immune system. You may escape it now but the result of
reckless lifestyle will spring up at old age.
Endeavour to have a glass of natural yoghurt everyday
whenever you have vaginal itching. Having garlic as part of
your diet is also recommended. Avoid too much of spicy and
refined foods. Also avoid excessive washing of the vaginal
area as that can only make it worse.
Like I always tell people, every man is a fan of the vagina
and every woman is a fan of the penis. The only thing that
determines how strong a fan your husband will be is your
ability to make his time in there a memorable one. Please do all
within your human power to get that man to begin t enjoy
sex with you.
When he fingers you and all he gets is a room filled with
terrible odour oozing from your vagina, he won’t try it
another day. When this happens, you find your man having
sex just to fulfill his role as the husband and no longer
because he enjoys it with you. Some women go about
complaining about their husband not being able to satisfy
them in bed and do it the way they want it. Madam, how do
you expect a man who loves life the way you do to put his
mouth in there with all the foul smell? A woman sent me a
text telling me her husband loves her sucking him, but when it
is her turn, the man remembers he is a chief in his town who
shouldn’t do that. The truth is that a good number of those
men still go out and do it to their girlfriends. This is a good
reason for you to tell yourself the truth about your state of
hygiene and help the man to become a good husband to you.
Next week, we will go into sex in our home and I know that
after this series, you shall begin to enjoy sex with your
spouse because that is God’s will for every marriage. Don’t
forget, there is nothing like unsanctified sex in marriage
(except anal sex); however you do it with your husband or
wife is acceptable before God.

Edo election: Ize-Iyamu, Obaseki in close race

The Edo State governorship election, held on Wednesday, appeared to be a tight race between the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, and the standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
Early results from some wards in the state, which had not been authenticated by the Independent National Electoral Commission, indicated that the two candidates were running neck and neck in the poll.

The two main parties, however, claimed to have gained comfortable lead in the election while accusing each other of planning to rig the poll.
While unconfirmed results showed that the PDP won seven out of the eight units in Ward 3, Uromi in the Esan North-East Local Government Area, where a former chairman of the BoT of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih, hails from, the APC won one unit.
Also, the APC lost in the polling unit of the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, where the PDP emerged victorious.
The APC, on its own, won in Ward 7 in the Oredo Local Government Area of the state.
The APC scored 4,412 votes while the PDP got 4,047 votes.
The governorship candidate of the PDP in the 2012 election in the state, Maj. Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (retd.), who is now a stalwart of the APC, led the ruling party to beat the PDP in Unit 18, 19, 20 and 21 of Ward one in the Oredo LGA.
In Unit 18, PDP got 158 while the APC got 259. In Unit 19, APC scored 146 and PDP polled 85.
In Unit 20, the APC got 259 votes while the PDP polled 208 votes and in Unit 21, the APC scored 128 votes leaving the PDP with 98 votes.
In Oredo Ward 12, out of the accredited 4,399 voters, the PDP took the lead with 2,066, leaving the APC with 2,041.
In Oredo Ward 4, out of the total accredited voters of 4,911, the APC scored 3,058 while the PDP polled 1,541.
The national leadership of the PDP alleged on Wednesday night that the APC was planning to overturn its alleged victory in the Edo State governorship election.
The party said the results it received from its agents in the state indicated that it was leading the APC with a wide merging in the election.
Spokesperson for the party and member of its National Caretaker Committee, Mr. Dayo Adeyeye, stated this in a statement in Abuja.
Adeyeye said, “Having received results from our agents at approximately 1,800 of the 2,627 polling units spread across the 192 wards in the 18 local government areas of Edo State, we can confirm that our party has attained a near unassailable lead in the Edo State governorship election.
“The results so far confirmed to us that our candidate has garnered approximately 55 per cent of the total votes cast by voters.’’
He alleged that the PDP was aware of the alleged connivance between the state government and a national commissioner at INEC to rig the election in favour of the ruling party in the state.
Adeyeye, a former minister of state for works, added, “We will like to reiterate our earlier note of warning: The Edo people and our party will resist any attempt to subvert the collective will of the people as expressed by their votes today.”
He urged members and supporters of the party in the state to continue guarding their votes at the ward collation centres and the local government collation centres.
“Eternal vigilance is the price we all have to pay for victory,” he added.
Also in a statement, the state Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chris Nehikhare, said it was surprised that INEC had delayed the announcement of the results from wards.
He said, “Voting stopped at 2pm and votes were counted immediately at the unit levels. From results made available to us, we are in a very comfortable lead.
“We are, however, shocked that up until now, no ward result has been declared.
‘‘We are aware that the APC and INEC plan to change the results at the collation centres and we wish to want that any change of the results will be met with stiff resistance.’’
But reacting to claims by the PDP, the APC said the opposition party was being mischievous “as usual”.
The APC National Vice-Chairman (South), Mr. Segun Oni, said, “The PDP is simply being mischievous.
“From the results I have seen from the field, from where we are monitoring the elections here in Abuja, the APC is in a comfortable lead.
“Out of a hundred, the PDP has not won five, even in units they claim to have won. We are investigating because the number of voters exceeds the number of registered voters per unit.”
Also, the state Chairman of the APC, Anselm Ojezua, dismissed the allegation, describing it as mischievous, since only INEC had the constitutional power to determine the winner of the election.
Ojezua said, “The fact that they are actually making those claims already tells me that there is mischief in the air because it is traditional that even when you know what the situation is, you have to wait for INEC to announce the results.
“If you see the fantastic results that are being posted from certain locations, you know that they could not have been credible. Therefore, I think that what they are doing is just to create more confusion.”
He, however, expressed concern on the announcement of results from the Ovia North-East Local Government Area on the Internet.
Ojezua added, “We are concerned about the figure being circulated on the Internet about the Ovia North-East. Certainly, we are collating the results and we will officially respond.’’
Meanwhile, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 5, Isaac Eke, described the election as very peaceful.
Speaking through the Police Public Relations Officer of Zone 5, Emeka Iheanacho, in an interview with one of our correspondents, Eke said the election was peaceful.
He said, “The process has been peaceful; there was no hindrance to voters to exercise their franchise.”
Osunbor hails INEC, security agencies
A former Governor of Edo State, Prof. Oserhemien Osunbor, commended the security agencies for maintaining peace and order during the governorship election.
He also praised the Independent National Electoral Commission for introducing reforms in to the electoral process.
Speaking with one of our correspondents after voting in Iruekpen, Osunbor, a chieftain of the APC, said the security situation was encouraging.
“The security agencies have done well to ensure peace and order.
“The people are orderly. The electoral process is getting better; maybe people are now used to the system. I’m satisfied. I hope the entire system remains so till the end,” he said.
INEC also denied report of ballot box snatching and gunshots in some polling centres during the Wednesday election.
Oshiomhole had earlier said he received a report  that some thugs allegedly snatched ballot boxes at Opoji in the Esan North-East Local Government Area during the election.
Oshiomhole also alleged that the suspected snatchers shot repeatedly before taking away the ballot boxes.
Meanwhile, INEC Deputy Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mr Nick Dazang, said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday:
“I just called Mr. Solomon Soyebi, who is the National Commissioner supervising the election, and he has denied the allegation of gunshots and ballot box snatching at Opoji in the Esan North-East Local Government Area of the state,” Dazang said.
On the reported accident involving a youth corps member serving with INEC, Dazang said he had not heard “any such sad news”, but promised to get back to NAN “if there is anything like that’’.
But INEC Electoral Officer in the Esan West Local Government Area of the state, Mr. Lebari Nduh, confirmed that hoodlums snatched a ballot box in Ward 7 Unit 11 during voting.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo State, Mr. Sam Olumekun, said collation of results would begin on Thursday.

A former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has faulted the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress for overruling the recommendation of its appeal panel on the Ondo State governorship primary.
The appeal panel had recommended the cancellation of the APC governorship primary in Ondo State, where a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, emerged the winner.
The National Working Committee of the ruling party, however, ignored the panel’s report and submitted Akeredolu’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission as the APC candidate for the November 26 governorship election in the state.
Atiku, in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday by his Media Office, urged the NWC of the party, led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, to promote  the rule of law and due process in the conduct of its affairs.
This, he said, was germane to the unity and stability of the party, adding that the leaders should stop breaking their own rules.
The National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, had, in a statement, criticised Odigie-Oyegun for rejecting the recommendation of the appeal panel on the Ondo primary of the party.
Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor, who called for the resignation of the national chairman, said Odigie-Oyegun was promoting injustice in the party by manipulating the Ondo primary.
In the statement by his media office, Atiku stated that it was imperative for the national leadership of the party to respect internal democracy and democratic tenets, warning that “you cannot break your own rules without creating problems.”
Atiku added that the NWC was supposed to be an impartial umpire in the arbitration of crisis among its members in any given election.
He noted that since the APC found veritable reasons to review the outcome of the governorship primary, and was able to establish valid grounds to cancel the exercise as well as call for a fresh one, the decision to deviate from the panel’s decision was a negation of due process and “an unfashionable hollow in democratic best practices.”
The former vice-president stated that it was wrong for the APC to have set aside a resolution its own organ reached on the crisis.
He advised the leadership of the party to do a soul-searching on why problem arose and escalated.
According to Atiku, the party leadership should always be guided by respect for the rules, fairness, equity, neutrality and respect for democratic consensus.
The former vice-president, however, urged aggrieved members of the APC in the Ondo election to exercise restraint in seeking redress to the crisis.
He asked the leadership of the party to retrace its steps and restore confidence among the conflicting parties in the state for the overall benefit of the ruling party.
One of our correspondents learnt that a meeting of the party leaders and some governors would take place next week.
It was gathered that the meeting was part of moves to resolve the crisis caused by the Ondo State primary.
A party leader, who confided in The PUNCH, on Wednesday, said, “I can tell you we will meet on the crisis, possibly on Wednesday (next week). Our leaders will also reach out to Asiwaju.”
There were reports on Wednesday that the party mandated the Progressives Governors’ Forum to intervene in the crisis.
According to the report, the party and the forum had mandated the Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, to meet Tinubu.
Tambuwal was said to have been contacted by the party leaders on Tuesday to mediate in the dispute between Tinubu and Odigie-Oyegun.
The PUNCH learnt that the governor would meet the APC leader on Saturday as part of efforts to resolve the crisis in the party.
It was reported on Wednesday that the crisis was one of the issues discussed at a meeting Tambuwal and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, had with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday.
The media aide to Tinubu, Tunde Rahman, however, said he was not aware of any planned meeting between the former governor and Tambuwal.
“I thought that when Tambuwal was asked if his meeting with Buhari had to do with the matter of the Ondo APC, he said he did not know,” Rahman said while parrying the question.
Meanwhile, a member of the appeal panel set up on the Ondo governorship primary, who spoke on condition of anonymity with our correspondent on Wednesday in Abuja, expressed sadness over the flouting of rules in the party.
He said, “I am glad our leaders have started speaking out. We cannot continue to have a situation where the proper things are jettisoned under the guise of expediency.
“That former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is standing up to be counted is something we should be happy about.”
